Welcome back to Week 2 of our Fish River Canyon series!
Last week, we marveled at this colossal chasm from above. Now, it’s time to lace up your boots and step into its depths on one of Africa’s most challenging and rewarding hikes — the legendary Fish River Canyon Trail.
This epic trek covers about 85 kilometers through the winding canyon floor. It usually takes 4 to 5 days, depending on your pace and sense of adventure. But make no mistake — this is no gentle stroll. There are no roads, no shops, and no luxury lodges along the way. Just you, the river, towering cliffs, and a raw wilderness that tests your endurance and fills your soul.
What makes it unique?
No marked trail: Hikers follow the riverbed and sandy banks, choosing the best path as they go.
Seasonal window: Due to scorching summer heat and risk of flash floods, the trail is open only from May to September.
Sleep under the stars: Nights are spent wild camping wherever you choose — a sleeping bag, a campfire, and the Milky Way above.
Permits required: Only a limited number of hikers are allowed at a time, so plan well in advance.
